FSL A320 and PDC
« on: April 20, 2019, 02:13:54 PM »

With the latest update of the FSL A320 simulating realistic PDC clearance now, is this a good time for all of us to get up to speed with Hoppie and start using it when controlling?  I have never used it but perhaps others here have and can provide some insight.

Yeah, I think this would be a good way to go. Might be a little dangerous depending on one guy to keep it running (but thanks Jeroen!). http://www.hoppie.nl/acars/

There's a Euroscope plugin for it (vSMR, https://github.com/pierr3/vSMR/wiki/CPDLC-Clearance-system).

Interesting you guys are talking about this.  I was thinking about this recently.

My only concern with it right now is that only the FSLabs airbus supports it unless the pilot is using the (outside of fs) client.

One thing I am researching right now is whether the pilot can initiate some manner of request so we know they are capable.  Since if they are not, using the pvt msg pdc would then be the main option.

So good idea.  It's being looked at.  However, until I work out all the details.  I am not going to ask Dean to make it FIR policy.

EDIT: If anyone has experience with it or gains any experience or knowledge, add to this thread please.  It would be most useful to know!

Thanks!

Perfect, thanks Mark!  I will take a look at this a little later once my brain wakes up :)

I have done a bit more work on this and I think I have it figured out now, although challenging to test without having multiple Vatsim connections going at the same time.

1) The pilot needs Hoppie installed whether they want the PDC on the Hoppie FMC or if they use the FSL A320.

For pilots to set it up, here is a good guide.
         https://community.vatsim.uk/topic/31560-pdc-pictoral-beginners-guide/

For ATC, you need to install Hoppies ATC client and the vSMR plug-in.  Here is a simpler guide from Vatsim UK
       https://community.vatsim.uk/topic/35951-cpdlcpdc-for-the-absolute-beginner-and-for-those-who-just-fancy-installing-it/

And a YouTube video showing it working.

It seems relatively simply and I think once pilots get to know that we can offer a PDC clearance right into their A320 MCDU they will be much more inclined to set this up and use it.

Is it working?  I had downloaded it a month ago and didn't get it working.

Mark: Seems to be. Haven't had an aircraft actually request via Hoppie yet, though.

This is interesting.

I always like using CPDLC in the real world.  In the real world it makes sense as it keeps freq congestion down, not really in VATSIM.  it is just another way to text pilots, although it will be a quicker, more convenient way to text pilots.

I am checking it out, now to wait for traffic that uses it...

Hmmm, ok.  I'll take a 2nd look and see what I am doing wrong.

Ok, have my first CPDLC flight with this system.

VERY helpfull for position reports in the far north.  just like RW. and way easier than texting.

Awesome!  Finally got it to work.  I assume that we only see CPDLC aircraft on the SMR enable ASR screen?  Haven't had any aircraft yet to test it.
