Canadian Xpress will be doing a fly-in to Thunder Bay (CYQT) on July 25th from 10am (1400z) - 9pm (0100z) EDT.

We invite you to come online in Thunder Bay during this, but this by no means is going to be a ‘signup’ event.

Even though it isn't realistic to NavCanada, they do have access to a lot more tools for accurate weather predicting, so we are also looking into TopSky for it's weather reporting, as it will allow for our controllers to predict deviations better, as well as vectoring around systems as required.

Some FIR’s policies override the VATCAN one in terms of inactivity, I’ll use mine (Winnipeg’s’) for example.

In Winnipeg, we require regular controllers to record 2 hours every month, instructors to do 5 every 2 months, and visitors have to log 1 hour every month.

However, every month with our activity check, we do try and make sure that we don’t put controllers inactive just because they’ve had real-life constraints, and as long as you are trying to make an attempt to continue to control/train, we usually won’t touch the status.

I’m sure other FIR’s have something similar as well, if anyone would like to add on.

I do think that Stacey does bring up a good point, newer students don’t have the experience and learn a lot quickly, and with controllers who have been away in the S1/S2 phase they usually need a refresher/re-training after a time away, compared to more senior controllers who have the experience drilled into their brain.

TL/DR: You should probably be fine going to whatever FIR given your time constraints, but it is important to dedicate to training, especially at the start

I’ve tried this in the past as well, definitely interesting to see the real traffic on ‘your’ scope!

I’ll look into doing Winnipeg’s around the next couple of weeks, it will give me something to do given the time we see ourselves in!

I've received several emails over the past couple of days about where to find CANscope, and thought I should clarify it.

It can be found at https://github.com/VatsimCanada/CANscope

The CANscope plugin's purpose is to add the tracking controller ID over radar targets like the ones that can be found with NAVCanada's real systems. It looks like this:



In case you are interested, this is how real systems look:


Although this new install method doesn't include the (very outdated) sector files that came with the old installation, you can sector files from your FIR's website.



To install the CANscope plugin into your scope, follow the steps found below (you should do this after you have downloaded your FIR's sector file):

1. Install CANscope from the Github directory


2. Extract the files to somewhere memorable, I recommend adding it into your Euroscope folder

3. Open up Euroscope with your FIR's sector file

4. Click on 'Other SET' then on 'Plug-ins...'



5. Load the CANscope.dll plug-in from where you placed it in Step 1

6. Allow the CANscope plug-in to draw on 'Standard ES radar screen'



Now you will get the controller IDs above the radar targets.

That must be it. I’m thinking it's because our voice communication names follow the rule of [Name] [Position] (ex. Winnipeg Centre, Winnipeg ATIS, etc.). Without the voice channel, it takes from the actual name of the position.

Here is what I have for your Winnipeg ATIS.
CYWG ATIS:Winnipeg ATIS:120.200:WA:A:CYWG:ATIS:CYWG:ATIS
Here is what I have for Halifax and similar airports.
CYHZ_ATIS:-:121.000:1A:-:CYHZ:ATIS:CYHZ:ATIS::

If your still having trouble, try adjusting your ESE file ATIS entries to see if that fixes it.  Bear in mind, that the AFV Atis has been having troubles, but that may have mostly been resolved now.
