Don’t think you could post to this forum if it was wrong.  Try setting just OBS (observer) with ES. If you don’t have authorization to perform any S1 yet, don’t login as S1. Wait till you get training.

actually - found it was a calibration issue - both FSUIPC and Windows were attempting throttle calibration configuration leading to all sorts of 'good fun'  --  deleted my FSUIPC.INI file and all's well

I use FSUIPC and  Reason being is for different aircraft and having different configurations. Ie dash 8 will be different then a BE60 or B739.

I get rid of the configurations within P3D itself.

believe I've found the source of my 'issues'  --  my Saitek EVO joystick is causing intermittent throttle inputs on the left engine - from near max throttle to even engaging thrust reverse - have attempted re-calibration but seems to be near death  --  ahh well, guess it's upgrade time

Yup, Saitek will do wonderful things.

News / CZQM Event Coordinator Appointment
« on: August 17, 2020, 11:23:51 AM »
In late June / early July, Jagard Strong had announced his resignation as the Event Coordinator for the Moncton / Gander FIR.  Jagard had agreed to stay on as the EC until a new coordinator could be found and trained into the position.  With this, I thank Jagard for his dedication, commitment, creativity and real-world knowledge in implementing events within the FIR.  Jagard is a strong asset that will be missed, however I'm sure we can still lean on him from time to time.

I am pleased to announce that Jack Koskie has been picked as our new Event Coordinator.  There were a number of people interested in the position, all with great attributes and communication skills. Although Jack has been appointed as the new EC, we will still be relying on some of our senior members to be the go-to person for some of our larger events. Jack has a responsibility to become creative with some graphic images for our social mediums and present these ideas to staff/membership.  We have determined that social media creativity with graphic design is a strong attribute for this position.  Jack is the contact person for event solicitation(s) from other participating FIRs and VAs.  Jack is still a student in training and a student in school, however he will benefit from all of our experience(s) and our leadership.  We will in turn, benefit from Jack's creativity and dedication.

Congratulations Jack on your appointment and thank-you for your acceptance.

Edmonton (CZEG) / Re: Calgary SID/route filing question
« on: July 14, 2020, 12:36:16 PM »
hithere - have been flying several routes in/out of CYYC lately in the majestic q400 and have noticed something that is making me scratch my head...

looking at FlightAware - WEN files several routes via IPSIT (specifically the YQU and YXJ flights) - IPSIT fix is depicted on both the BANFF and STAMPEDE departures which are 'jet only'

I was corrected recently, rightfully so, for filing a 'jet' fix for a 'non-jet' departure  --  however, if I utilize the 'realworld' route from flightaware it is indeed filing a jet fix for a non-jet departure

does YYC terminal treat q400s as jets or am I just missing something

cheers - Ken

Air Traffic so quiet lately, maybe real world not being concerned.  Who knows...

Montreal (CZUL) / Re: 'Cheat sheet' pour communication en francais
« on: July 06, 2020, 10:54:29 AM »
I am assuming that you are asking as an ATC member and not as a pilot?

While I am only speaking for being a Moncton instructor, we send out standard/approved phraseology for use within Canadian airspace when we have a new student join us.  If you are just commencing training in Montreal, ask your instructor or chief instructor.  Being ATC, the phraseology is much stricter than being a pilot.

Not a recommended phraseology sheet for ATC in Canada.

En anglais , j ai utilise

pour me donner un cheat sheet .

Est-qu il existe un equivalent en francais? Pour l instant, je ne suis pas pret a faire un vol en francais.

As some strive to be close to the real thing, I don't believe that NavCanada uses this type of environment.

As a new guy, my recent habit is to fly VFR near, but not in, active controlled airspace. I monitor Unicom as required on COM1, while I listen to (usually) the Center controller on COM2. It gives me a better idea of procedures and systems, and frankly makes a more immersive experience while enjoying some flying.

So tonight while flying over the Bay of Fundy I got an unexpected "Contact Me". While trying to get to the right frequency, I first fumbled by contacting the wrong controller. I continued to fumble by further replying, in text, half to the original "contact me" PM and half in the Moncton Center frequency, no doubt to the amusement of all on the channel as I type seemingly nonsense text in the middle of an event. I couldn't even tell you how I split a text message into two vPilot windows but here we are. I managed to get it together and ended up with flight following to my destination, a blissfully short sunset flight to Yarmouth.

At least I am pretty sure I had my phraseology correct for Moncton Center, so that's something.

ZQM, thanks for your patience with the new guy. Learning is fun.

I'm sure you did well!

Excellent material, thanks Ken!
