News / VATCAN Discord Server - Public release
« on: April 08, 2020, 12:11:25 AM »
VATCAN has been testing a Discord server for some time with our staff members and we're now ready to open it to our controlling VATCAN members!

Some important notes about this server:
  • Joining Discord is completely optional and is there to allow our members to connect in another way. Important announcements including events must continue to be posted to the VATCAN forums so they remain accessible to everyone.
  • The VATCAN Discord is subject to all VATSIM CoC rules and regulations.
  • You will need to link your VATSIM CID to your Discord account from the VATCAN website to setup your permissions.

To start using Discord follow these steps:

1) Download and setup the app from The app is available for most popular OS's.
2) Connect your VATSIM CID to Discord by modifying your profile in the website My VATCAN>Profile or clicking here: (You can also set your email subscription preferences here!)
3) Click the blue Join Discord button to start linking your CID to Discord.
4) Click the Discord Accept Invite button to the VATCAN Discord server.
5) In the VATCAN Discord server, go to the channel #verification by clicking on the channel name. If you don't see the channel initially after logging in, it should become visible within 5 minutes.
6) To start the verification process type "-verify" (without the quotation marks). The verification process will take a few minutes to complete so please be patient.
7) Enjoy Discord!

Phil and I want to thank all the FIR staff members who tested the server and give a special thanks to Jeff McMillan and Jordan Jolenaar that helped create and setup the server.

General Discussion / Unintended transfers out of FIR's
« on: November 05, 2019, 09:45:52 AM »
On October 22, 2019; the VATCAN team made some repairs to the website that resulted in a previously damaged CRON job from running as it normally would. This scheduled program was responsible for reassigning exams, transfers and updating VATSIM's CERT to match the data within VATCAN's website. Though the program was repaired, it had the unintentional consequence of transferring some exiting controllers out of their FIR's and being assigned as non-members or into other FIRs. While we were able to fix most of the errors, some controllers transferred prior to the CERT update remain impacted and we don't have logs to track these impacted individuals.

If you are having problems accessing the forums or see that you are no longer part of an FIR that you are supposed to be with please contact me directly vatcan2[at] with your CID# and the FIR you are supposed to be with. I'll check the transfers and if I do see you have been unintentionally moved, I will transfer you back into your FIR.

Apologies to those that have been impacted but this fix was necessary to get our systems running properly again.

« on: April 25, 2019, 10:01:20 AM »
I'm happy to announce Phil Dowling has been appointed as our new VACTCAN Division Director effective immediately.

Phil brings with him some incredible experience as a past SATUK Director and later as VATEUR Regional Deputy Director. He's currently the Chief Instructor at CZYZ and was instrumental in the project management of some critical IT tasks we have been running in the background. He is a calm level minded leader and I'm confident with his experience and leadership will continue to guide VATCAN in a positive direction.

I will remain as the Deputy Division Director reporting directly to Phil.

Please join me all in congratulating Phil on his new role!

General Discussion / Congratulations our newest C3/I3 controllers
« on: April 05, 2019, 11:29:22 PM »
It's with pleasure I get to announce that both Dean Roy and Gustavo Aguilar have been recognized in the Q2 Chiefs meeting for their accomplishments and achievements towards improving VATCAN and as such, have been promoted to the honourary rank of C3.

Dean Roy has been recognized for his continual work for the Toronto FIR. From Chief Instructor to CZYZ Chief, he has continually pushed to improve the service delivered at Toronto. His high standards have resulted in numerous high quality controllers and has personally created a great FIR team all while improving cross-communication throughout VATCAN.

Gustavo Aguilar has been recognized for his work with Vancouver and with Edmonton. While low key, he always shows up and provides a helping hand when needed. During desperate needs like CTP, Gustavo was quick to offer help with sector file changes and has been a mentor and great instructor to everyone within the Edmonton FIR. He was also responsible for the creation of the Euroscope YouTube videos that are helpful to everyone looking to setup Euroscope for the first time.

Congrats to both of you!

General Discussion / 2019 Cross the Pond Westbound
« on: March 17, 2019, 03:21:43 PM »
Congrats to both YYZ and YVR for being selected as CTP Westbound destinations. This is going to be fun but now the real work starts. Based on the CTP selections this time we will need to refocus our resources as we anticipate more northerly traffic than usual. This should make Moncton more manageable but could prove to be a strain on CZEG.

I'm going to again ask if there are any en-route certified controllers, (rated C1) interested in helping control for this event to please reach out to me directly at This event while stressful, is a great opportunity to test your skills, challenge yourself and experience traffic rarely ever seen on VATSIM.  I've personally have enjoyed them as verification of my own skills and it's always satisfying to know you've been able to cope with the most stressful events.

News / Interim CZUL Chief - Yanick Coulombe
« on: March 10, 2019, 04:13:42 AM »
I'm happy to announce the VATCAN executive has appointed Yanick Coulombe as interim Chief for CZUL.

Yanick was previously webmaster for CZUL and was instrumental in helping coordinate training, getting in touch with existing students and providing sector files necessary to get our training program running again. His familiarity of the airspace, continued online presence and eagerness to relaunch Montreal will be beneficial to all pilots and Montreal controllers alike.

Please join me in congratulating Yanick on his promotion.

Dear Montreal Members and Pilot Visitors.

As many of you know, there has been some turmoil in the staffing in Montreal lately, and unfortunately, there has not been much controlling or training happening in the Montreal FIR. The VATCAN Executive has been observing this situation for some time, and we have finally decided to step in and take a more direct role in re-establishing Montreal as one of the premier FIRs in both Canada and across the VATSIM network.

Unfortunately, the training program for controllers in Montreal is basically non-existent at this time. We are going to rebuild the training program from scratch, but this will take time. In order to train some controllers, we have invited a select number of english-only instructors to come to Montreal from other FIRs to help train our bilingual students. While these instructors are working in the FIR, we will encourage them to spend time online to help familiarize themselves with the airspace in Montreal.

So for those pilots who prefer to speak french, please be patient with us. These controllers will indicate in their Controller Info that they are english-only controllers, and will request you to use english during your interactions with them. They may also request you to use english while interacting with their students, to ensure they can listen, understand, and provide feedback to the students. We appreciate that you prefer french, but the only way we will get french controllers trained at this point, is using these english-only instructors. This is only intended as a temporary measure, and it is expected by the end of this year, that only bilingual controllers will normally control in the Montreal FIR.

We will also be introducing new training materials. Much of this is being rewritten from scratch. I encourage existing Montreal controllers to review the materials as we post them, and please tell us about any mistakes you find. We are also writing these materials in english, only because it is the language we are fluent in, and the only way to create them quickly. We fully intend to translate the training materials to french once we have finished writing the english versions. Since the VATCAN Executives are not fluent in french, we will be especially grateful if you can correct our grammar as we begin the process of translating the training presentations to french.

Thank you all for your continued patience. Should you have any questions about the Montreal FIR, please don't hesitate to contact the VATCAN Executive staff. We will be actively working in the Montreal FIR over the coming months to get it moving again, while we work towards appointing full time staff.

Yours Truly,

Nate Power, Division Director vatcan1[at]
Travis Chan, Deputy Director vatcan2[at]
Rob Nabieszko, Training Director vatcan3[at]

The training initiative we had in place for CZUL will now be managed by Rob and myself until we fill the position of CZUL Chief.

As we start a new year we wanted to give our members an opportunity to speak with the executives at the VATCAN town hall. We will be reserving 2 hrs for this meeting.

The event will take place on:

Date: January 26th, 2019 @ 0100z-0300z (2000 Eastern)

In preparation for the event, you can also send questions in advance via email. If we see common questions or you don't feel comfortable speaking publicly this is a great method to get those questions answered. We'll try to get to as many questions as we can.
Please send questions to vatcan2[at]

Looking forward to seeing all of you there!
