General Discussion / Unintended transfers out of FIR's
« on: November 05, 2019, 09:45:52 AM »
On October 22, 2019; the VATCAN team made some repairs to the website that resulted in a previously damaged CRON job from running as it normally would. This scheduled program was responsible for reassigning exams, transfers and updating VATSIM's CERT to match the data within VATCAN's website. Though the program was repaired, it had the unintentional consequence of transferring some exiting controllers out of their FIR's and being assigned as non-members or into other FIRs. While we were able to fix most of the errors, some controllers transferred prior to the CERT update remain impacted and we don't have logs to track these impacted individuals.

If you are having problems accessing the forums or see that you are no longer part of an FIR that you are supposed to be with please contact me directly vatcan2[at] with your CID# and the FIR you are supposed to be with. I'll check the transfers and if I do see you have been unintentionally moved, I will transfer you back into your FIR.

Apologies to those that have been impacted but this fix was necessary to get our systems running properly again.

News / Re: Audio for VATSIM Live October 14th!
« on: October 03, 2019, 09:16:11 AM »
Further to the release news, the team working on it wanted this information disseminated down to members:

Due to several technical and procedural issues that cannot be solved before launch we have had to make ta decision to simplify things before launch. Pseudo positions will not be injected into FSD at launch. Although the AFV-VCSS panel will allow controllers to monitor and transmit on different frequencies, additional positions will not be visible to other controllers or pilot clients. Wed advise larger sectors to use the simplex coupling mode/Single Frequency Coupling Mode to operate many transceivers on a single frequency

AFC does not have a capability to work with sweatbox, we therefore advise sweatbox sessions take place on teamspeak or another medium as seem to be the norm for a lot of sweatbox sessions nowadays anyway

Planning an event to celebrate when the new codec go live? I still hold back my vatsim time because of the audio quality. Too many ‘say again’ from me for.

Vincent Rouleau

Sorry didn't catch that, say again?

Congrats Yanick, you’ve done a great job helping bring Montreal back to an active FIR again.

This is a big win for Montreal, VATCAN and all pilots!

Congrats on the new appointment, I think your ideas and enthusiasm is going to bring a lot to the table.

News / New VATCAN Division Director, Phil Dowling
« on: April 25, 2019, 10:01:20 AM »
I'm happy to announce Phil Dowling has been appointed as our new VACTCAN Division Director effective immediately.

Phil brings with him some incredible experience as a past SATUK Director and later as VATEUR Regional Deputy Director. He's currently the Chief Instructor at CZYZ and was instrumental in the project management of some critical IT tasks we have been running in the background. He is a calm level minded leader and I'm confident with his experience and leadership will continue to guide VATCAN in a positive direction.

I will remain as the Deputy Division Director reporting directly to Phil.

Please join me all in congratulating Phil on his new role!

Good to note. It might be a good idea to avoid using CYQB's ATIS.

General Discussion / Re: Handoff issues
« on: April 06, 2019, 01:37:39 AM »
I've created an alias .msp for manual handoffs and will usually get them started 20KM from their airspace. At times though they are still even late for that.

I follow the exact method MSP uses for us to avoid confusing them:

handoff, 20 East of SSM on a 5126 code ACA123 at FL310.

my actual alias in the file is:

handoff, $1 of $2 on a $3 code $4 at FL$5

General Discussion / Congratulations our newest C3/I3 controllers
« on: April 05, 2019, 11:29:22 PM »
It's with pleasure I get to announce that both Dean Roy and Gustavo Aguilar have been recognized in the Q2 Chiefs meeting for their accomplishments and achievements towards improving VATCAN and as such, have been promoted to the honourary rank of C3.

Dean Roy has been recognized for his continual work for the Toronto FIR. From Chief Instructor to CZYZ Chief, he has continually pushed to improve the service delivered at Toronto. His high standards have resulted in numerous high quality controllers and has personally created a great FIR team all while improving cross-communication throughout VATCAN.

Gustavo Aguilar has been recognized for his work with Vancouver and with Edmonton. While low key, he always shows up and provides a helping hand when needed. During desperate needs like CTP, Gustavo was quick to offer help with sector file changes and has been a mentor and great instructor to everyone within the Edmonton FIR. He was also responsible for the creation of the Euroscope YouTube videos that are helpful to everyone looking to setup Euroscope for the first time.

Congrats to both of you!

News / Re: VATCAN1 Resignation
« on: April 03, 2019, 10:41:45 PM »
Without reiterating everything Phil said, thanks for always being there to help support any initiative we had to drive. When we suggested changes you were always open to the recommendations and were quick to support them recognizing they were to the benefit of the division. Stepping up and volunteering to move a division isn't easy and for that I thank you.

Fortunately we will still be working together but in another capacity. I look forward to helping you in your new challenge of regrowing Winnipeg's FIR.
